Upcoming Children's Classes

Bring your playclothes--it's always mud season in the ceramics studio!

Introduction to Clay for Young Children (ages 3-6)
Mondays 3:00-4:15, September 22nd-October 6th

This introductory, process-oriented class is for young children and their grown-ups. We will play with clay in all its states—wet, slippery, mucky, moldable, crumbly. Enjoy learning how to model, mix, roll, squish and press clay and use simple tools for mark-making. Limited to six children and their grown-ups, materials included.

Introduction to Clay for Homeschoolers (ages 6-11)
Fridays 10:00-11:15, September 26th-October 17th

This course uses large-scale collaborative projects to teach kids the basic vocabulary of building with clay. Forget about building a toothbrush holder for grandma. We will have a new project each week that fills the studio as participants learn how to translate their ideas into sculptures, shapes and tiles. Once participants learn a set of building skills, we will integrate art history and the science and chemistry of firing as each child completes a pieces of tableware to bring home. Limited to seven participants, materials and firing of one finished piece included.

Classes will run, provided at least four children are enrolled.

Cost: Because I realize children's activities can become costly, particularly for parents of homeschoolers, I have a sliding scale fee for classes. Each participant (or parent/kid pair)  pays $6-12 per class. Fees are due at the start of each session.

For parents of very young children: I want my classes to be enjoyable for kids and their parents. We will be using non-toxic materials and plastic/wooden tools, but please use your best judgement in assessing your child's readiness for clay work. If you have questions about whether you and your child would enjoy working in clay together, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
